How to Avoid the Pre-Christmas Smash Repair Rush in Geelong

Geelong panel shops fill completely by mid-December and don't reopen until mid-January. If your car needs work, here's why November is your last real window before a 6-week wait.

How to Avoid the Pre-Christmas Smash Repair Rush in Geelong

Every year, without exception, the same thing happens across Geelong's smash repair industry: workshops that had reasonable availability in October fill completely through November, and by mid-December, every quality shop in the region has a waitlist extending into the new year.

The industry shuts down for approximately two weeks over Christmas and New Year. When it reopens in mid-January, those waitlisted customers are at the front of a queue that's also competing with the summer holiday accident volume. Drivers who put off minor repairs in November find themselves waiting until February or March for a booking.

If your car has accumulated damage — from winter road conditions, a spring hail event, a minor incident that you haven't got around to yet — November is your last realistic window to get it repaired before a 6-week industry hiatus.

Here's exactly why, and what to do about it.

Why Geelong Shops Fill Completely Before Christmas

Three things happen simultaneously in the November–December period:

Post-hail demand hits its peak. Spring hail events in the Geelong and broader Victorian region generate significant repair volumes. Shops that absorbed October storm damage are still working through that backlog in November.

End-of-year urgency from businesses. Fleet and commercial operators want vehicles repaired before year-end for accounting, compliance, and simply because vehicles standing idle over the Christmas shutdown represent wasted opportunity. Business bookings surge in November.

Consumer awareness of the shutdown. Drivers who've been putting off repairs all year realise in November that if they don't book now, they'll be waiting until February. This realisation hits the whole market at once.

The supply side — skilled panel beaters and spray painters — doesn't expand to meet this demand spike. There are only so many qualified tradespeople in the Geelong region and the industry's skill shortage hasn't improved. Demand compresses against constrained supply and the waitlist grows rapidly.

What "Waiting Until After Christmas" Actually Means

If you put off booking a smash repair in November and contact shops in January, here's the realistic scenario:

  • Quality shops will be booked for 4–8 weeks from reopening
  • You're competing with everyone else who also waited, plus the January holiday accident volume
  • The earliest realistic booking for a multi-day repair is late February in a normal year
  • If there's been a major hail event or weather event over summer, extend that further

That's potentially 3+ months from deciding to act to having the repair done. For vehicles with unaddressed damage sitting through the Geelong summer — heat, UV, and summer rain working on any exposed or compromised surfaces — that's three months of additional deterioration.

The Damage That Gets Worse If You Wait

Not all repairs are urgent from a vehicle condition standpoint, but some are. If your car has any of the following, November is particularly important:

Paint damage with exposed metal. Any area where the paint has been broken — a chip that's reached bare metal, an abrasion from an impact — is oxidising. Every week that passes advances the corrosion process slightly. By summer, a minor paint chip can have rust bubbling under the surrounding paint.

Structural damage with open seams. If impact damage has opened any seam welds or panel joints, moisture penetrates year-round but especially during the wet spring and summer storm season.

Damaged rubber seals around windows or doors. A door that was contacted in a low-speed impact and now doesn't close perfectly creates a seal gap. Water ingress during Geelong's spring rain season causes interior damage — rusted floor pans, mouldy carpet — that is far more expensive to remediate than the original door repair.
