Back to School, Back to Car Parks: Fixing the Dents Summer Left Behind

Summer holidays are over and your car has the car park dents to prove it. Here's how paintless dent removal fixes holiday dings quickly and cost-effectively — no repainting needed.

Back to School, Back to Car Parks: Fixing the Dents Summer Left Behind

The school holidays are over. The family SUV has done its time at beach car parks, shopping centre car parks, and every other high-density parking situation the summer threw at it. And somewhere in there — probably without even a note left on the windscreen — someone put a dent in it.

Maybe it's a door ding from the supermarket. Maybe it's a mystery dent on the rear quarter that appeared at some point during the holiday season. Maybe it's several of these.

March is one of the busiest months we see for minor dent repair, and for good reason. The summer holiday season is the most intense car park exposure period of the year for most Australian families, and the accumulated minor damage becomes impossible to ignore once you're back in the routine and have a moment to look at the car properly.

The good news: most holiday-season car park damage is exactly what paintless dent removal (PDR) was designed for.

What Car Park Season Does to Your Car

Summer holiday car parks are a specific kind of hostile environment for vehicle bodywork:

Higher traffic density. Popular destinations like the Surf Coast, the Bellarine Peninsula, and Geelong's waterfront precincts are packed during January and February. More vehicles in the same car park means more door swing events, more tight manoeuvring, and more opportunities for contact.

Unfamiliar vehicles. Interstate visitors, hire cars, and occasional drivers who rarely navigate busy car parks are all in the mix. Unfamiliar vehicles are handled with less precision than your own.

Trolleys. Every supermarket car park is a trolley hazard during peak season. The wind catches them, customers don't return them properly, and they find the nearest panel.

Tight parking bays. Beach and tourist car parks are often older infrastructure designed for smaller vehicles. Modern SUVs and dual-cabs barely fit in bays designed for 1990s-era vehicles, and the margin for door-opening error is minimal.

Why PDR Is the Right Tool for Holiday Car Park Damage

Car park dents — door dings, trolley impacts, minor reverse contacts — are typically characterised by:

  • Round or oval shape
  • Smooth edges (no sharp crease lines)
  • Paint surface intact over and around the dent
  • Shallow to moderate depth

This profile is exactly where PDR excels. A trained PDR technician uses purpose-made tools to access the back of the panel through existing openings and carefully massage the dent out, restoring the metal to its original contour without touching the paint surface.

The result: your factory paint is completely preserved. No colour matching required, no risk of a slightly different sheen between the repaired panel and the rest of the car, no reduction in the vehicle's originality. And the turnaround is significantly faster than conventional panel repair — most single door dings are done in an hour or two.

When PDR Isn't Suitable

Paintless dent removal has limits. It won't work if:

  • The paint is broken or chipped over the dent — the damage needs to be addressed at the paint level, not just the metal
  • The dent has a sharp crease — a crease (as opposed to a smooth dent) stretches the metal, which doesn't respond to PDR the same way
  • The dent is on a panel edge — access behind edge areas is limited and the geometry makes PDR more difficult
  • The dent is very deep — extremely deep dents may have stretched the metal beyond what PDR can fully correct

At the assessment, we'll tell you immediately whether PDR is the right approach or whether conventional repair will produce a better result. We don't push PDR where it isn't the right tool.

Multiple Dents at Once: Better Value Than You Think

If you've accumulated several minor dents over summer, addressing them together is more cost-effective than dealing with them one at a time. The setup time for a PDR session is similar whether we're doing one dent or five, so there's meaningful efficiency in grouping them.

Bring the car in, we'll map all the dents, give you a combined quote, and in most cases have the car back to you the same day.

Private Pay vs. Insurance

For small dents, insurance is usually not the right path. If your excess is $500 and the repair is $300, claiming costs you more than it saves — and creates a claim record. We give you a straightforward private quote so you can make that calculation before you commit.

For more significant damage — multiple panels, paint damage, or dents resulting from an identified at-fault incident — insurance is worth exploring.
