Hail Damage Car Repair Geelong: Insurance Claim or Pay Cash?

Car hit by hail in Geelong? Here's whether to claim on insurance or pay privately, what hail repairs actually involve, and how to get the best outcome for your vehicle.

Hail Damage Car Repair Geelong: Insurance Claim or Pay Cash?

Geelong and the surrounding Bellarine Peninsula are no strangers to severe weather events. When a significant hailstorm rolls through, the result is often hundreds of vehicles with dimpled roofs, bonnets, and panels that look like a golf ball surface.

If your car has been caught in a hail event, you're facing a decision: lodge an insurance claim, or get the repairs done privately?

This guide explains both options, what hail repair actually involves, and how to make the decision that's right for your specific situation.

What Does Hail Damage Actually Do to a Vehicle?

Hail damage creates dents in metal panels — roofs, bonnets, boots, guards, and doors are most commonly affected. Unlike collision damage that typically concentrates on one area, a hailstorm can create dozens or hundreds of individual dents across the entire vehicle.

The severity varies widely:

  • Light hail (under 2cm): Small, shallow dents — usually treatable with paintless dent removal
  • Moderate hail (2–4cm): Deeper dents across multiple panels — may require PDR on some panels and conventional repair on others
  • Severe hail (over 4cm, or very high-density): Can break paint, crack glass, and create dents too deep for PDR

If paint has been broken or glass damaged, repair options change significantly.

The Two Methods of Hail Repair

Paintless Dent Removal (PDR)

PDR is the gold standard for hail damage when the paint hasn't been broken. A qualified PDR technician uses specialist tools to carefully massage each dent out from behind the panel, restoring the metal to its original shape without any repainting.

Advantages of PDR:

  • Preserves original paint — no colour matching required
  • Significantly faster than conventional repair
  • Often lower cost
  • Maintains vehicle's originality and resale value
  • No risk of paint mismatch

PDR is suitable when:

  • Dents are round or oval with smooth edges
  • Paint surface is intact over the dent
  • Dent depth is not too extreme

Conventional Panel Repair

Where dents are too deep for PDR, paint has cracked, or panel edges are involved, conventional repair is required — filling, painting, and refinishing in a spray booth.

This produces excellent results but involves more time and the paint matching challenge. In a hail event with many vehicles being repaired simultaneously, getting a genuine colour match on older or faded paint can be tricky.

Most significant hail events require a combination of PDR for most dents and conventional repair for particularly severe damage or areas where paint has broken.

Insurance Claim or Private Repair?

This is the key question most Geelong drivers face after a hail event. Here's how to think through it:

Claim on Insurance When:

The damage is extensive. A roof covered in 80 dents costs significantly more than the standard excess on a comprehensive policy. If the total repair cost will clearly exceed your excess by a meaningful amount, claiming makes financial sense.

Your policy has good hail coverage. Most comprehensive car insurance policies in Australia cover hail as an "act of nature" event. Check your PDS for exclusions, particularly around where the vehicle was parked (some policies exclude damage when the vehicle was in a location with a weather warning in effect — confirm your specific policy terms).

You don't want the repair to come out of your own pocket. Even if the numbers are close, the stress of a large bill during an already-disruptive weather event is a legitimate reason to claim.

Pay Privately When:

Damage is minor. If you have three small dents on the bonnet, the repair cost may be $300–500. If your excess is $500 or more, claiming gains you nothing and creates paperwork.

You want to avoid any premium impact. Even for not-at-fault weather events, some insurers adjust premiums based on claim history. Confirm how your specific insurer treats weather event claims before deciding.

You have a very high excess policy. Budget and third-party policies often have high excesses that make small weather claims not worth lodging.

Get a Quote First

Before making any decision — call us. We'll give you a free assessment of the hail damage and a written quote for the repair cost. With that number in hand, the insurance-vs-private decision becomes straightforward: if the repair cost significantly exceeds your excess, claim. If it's close or below, pay privately.

You can't make this decision well without the actual number.

What Happens After a Major Hail Event in Geelong

Large hail events create a surge in demand for repair services. Reputable shops fill their books within days of a significant storm. Here's what that means for you:

Book in as soon as possible. Don't wait to see if the dents will somehow resolve themselves — they won't. The longer you wait after a major event, the longer you'll wait for a repair appointment.

Be cautious of "hail chasers." After significant weather events, mobile repair operators sometimes arrive in the area offering cheap PDR. Some are legitimate and skilled. Others are not. Ask for written warranties, check online reviews, and be wary of anyone wanting cash upfront.

Understand that parts supply may be affected. If your hail damage included broken glass (windscreen, rear window, sunroof), parts may be on back-order after a widespread event affects many vehicles simultaneously. Build this into your expectations for timeframe.

After a Hail Event: Your Checklist

  1. Photograph all damage before touching anything — date and location stamped
  2. Check for broken glass — windscreens, rear windows, side glass, sunroof
  3. Get a professional assessment before deciding whether to claim
  4. Call your insurer within 24–48 hours if you're claiming (check your policy's notification timeframe)
  5. Assert your right to choose your repairer — you don't have to use the insurer's preferred hail repairer
  6. Book in quickly — shops fill fast after a major event
