Why Cheap Panel Beaters Cost You More in the Long Run
When you're looking at damage to your car and the quotes start coming in, it's natural to go with the lowest number. Especially if the repair isn't going through insurance and you're paying out of pocket.
But in the smash repair industry specifically, the cheapest quote is almost always the most expensive outcome.
This isn't a vague claim. There are specific, predictable reasons why low-cost repairs create follow-on costs — and understanding them will help you make a smarter decision.
How Low Quotes Are Made Possible
A legitimate quote for smash repairs has a floor — the cost of quality parts, skilled labour, and proper equipment. When a quote comes in significantly below that floor, something has been removed from the equation.
There are only a few ways to cut the cost of a smash repair:
1. Use aftermarket or non-genuine parts Genuine OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts are engineered specifically for your vehicle model. They meet manufacturer safety specifications and maintain your vehicle's crash safety ratings. Aftermarket alternatives are cheaper but are not held to the same standard — they may not fit as precisely, may not perform the same in a subsequent accident, and may affect your vehicle's safety system calibration.
2. Use less skilled labour Experienced, qualified panel beaters cost more per hour. Apprentices and underqualified workers cost less. Structural repairs in particular — chassis straightening, rail repairs, seam welding — require genuine expertise. Done poorly, they create vehicles that look fine but aren't structurally sound.
3. Skip steps in the process Quality repairs involve multiple stages: strip-down, structural assessment, repair or replacement, priming, paint preparation, colour matching, painting in a proper booth, curing, colour sanding, polishing, reassembly, and quality inspection. Cutting any of these steps cuts time and cost. It also cuts quality.
4. Under-scope the damage A low quote may simply be quoting less work than actually needs to be done. The car gets partially repaired, it goes back together, and then the additional required work becomes apparent later — at which point you're committed to that repairer and paying more regardless.
The Follow-On Costs of Cheap Repairs
Repeat repairs
The most direct cost is having to redo the work. Paint that peels within 12 months. A panel that develops a ripple as the filler shrinks. A door that starts to rust because the metal wasn't properly treated before painting. Any of these requires the work to be redone — now paying twice for the same repair.
Safety consequences
For any collision that involved structural impact, a properly trained panel beater will assess and address structural damage as part of the repair. An underqualified repairer, or one cutting corners, may restore cosmetic appearance without verifying structural integrity.
Modern vehicles are engineered with precisely calculated crumple zones that absorb energy in a crash to protect occupants. If these structures have been repaired incorrectly, the vehicle may not perform as designed in a subsequent accident. The cost of this isn't measured in dollars.
ADAS recalibration
Most vehicles built after 2015 include advanced driver assistance systems — automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring. The sensors that power these systems are often located in bumpers, windscreens, and body panels.
After any repair to these areas, the systems need to be checked and likely recalibrated using manufacturer-specific equipment. A repairer without this equipment (or unwilling to pay for the process) will skip it. You'll drive away with safety systems that appear to work but are out of calibration — and discover this at the worst possible moment.
Resale value
When you sell your vehicle, a professional inspection will reveal poorly done repairs. Mismatched paint, visible filler, inconsistent panel gaps, and rust around repair areas all reduce what a buyer will pay — sometimes by significantly more than the difference between the cheap and quality quote.
Car history reports and professional pre-purchase inspections are common now. Poor repairs don't stay hidden.
Insurance complications
If your vehicle is written off or involved in another accident, your insurer will assess the current condition of the vehicle. Pre-existing poor repairs can complicate claims and affect settlements.
What a Fair Quote Actually Looks Like
This doesn't mean the most expensive quote is always the best. Premium pricing doesn't guarantee premium quality either. What you're looking for is a quote that reflects genuine quality work at a fair margin.
Signs of a trustworthy quote:
- Itemised breakdown of parts and labour — you can see what you're paying for
- Specification of genuine OEM parts (or an honest conversation if alternatives are proposed)
- Realistic timeframe that reflects the scope of work
- Written warranty on workmanship offered without you having to ask
- Willingness to show you the vehicle mid-repair if you want to inspect progress
Signs of a quote that's too good to be true:
- Significantly lower than all other quotes without a clear explanation
- Vague about parts — "we'll fix it" without specifying what with
- No written documentation
- Pressure to commit immediately
- No warranty offered or warranty heavily caveated
What to Ask Every Repairer Before Committing
- Are you using genuine OEM parts or aftermarket alternatives?
- What warranty do you provide on workmanship?
- Is your shop VACC accredited?
- Do you have the equipment to recalibrate ADAS systems if needed?
- Can I see your spray booth?
A quality repairer will answer all of these confidently and without hesitation.
